It is a joy to play this game for its new features, enhanced visuals and improved combat. But for the newcomers, the early story of this sequel might be a little confusing.

Dusk Diver 2 Review:

For the Dusk Diver 2 review, I will cover how the sequel has changed.

Background:

Dusk Diver 2 expands the story of Yang Yumo. Yumo is now a college student who has to balance school, work at a convenience store, and fight inter-dimensional beasts.

Dusk Diver 2 has many systems and content that the player can indulge with.

Story:

The story of Dusk Diver 2 takes place a year after the Dusk Diver events. Yumo, Leo, Le Viada, and Baht saved the human realm from inter-dimensional beings. To save humanity from an unknown threat, the team reunites.

However, unveiling the mystery of the unknown threat takes too long to develop. The tangible story’s development doesn’t occur until over half of the game. The slow start is frustrating. Each chapter uses the same plot device to keep the progress running and the mystery going.

The new players to the Dusk Diver series will have a particularly tough time understanding the story from the beginning. Dusk Diver 2 is termed a self-contained story. But still, there are too many references and jargon from the previous game. This makes things confusing for the newcomers.

First Impression:

Dusk Diver 2 was a bit slow on Switch. Although with its premise, music, and characters, it made a good first impression. Some aspects of the interface and the NPCs pedestrian can remind you of Tokyo Mirage Sessions from the Altus and Nintendo. You will be busy exploring the collectibles, restaurants, and more between the missions.

Combat:

In Dusk Diver 2, the combat is average. Having multiple playable characters can help you. But not for a long time. The enemies feel too bloated in their HP.

Most fights end up against a handful of enemies at a time. You will have plenty of options on how to fight against your enemies. Mix combos of light and heavy attack, dodge technique, and the ability to equip three specials.

Performance:

On Switch, the original Dusk Diver wasn’t a bad experience. But sadly, we can’t say this in the case of its sequel, Dusk Diver 2. The performance of this game is never stable. It feels like it remains below 30fps most of the time. While on PS4/PS5, 60fps is targeted. But often, the game stutters when panning over places.

For any action game, performance stability is a top priority. And a game like Dusk Diver 2, an Action RPG, has a sluggish performance during combat and exploration. This will hold the experience back. Also, the long load times will test your patience too.

Visuals, Character Designs, and Style:

On Switch, the Dusk Diver 2 has some great visuals. The character designs are cool. The stylish look of the game is another plus point. The Dusk Diver 2 might not be good enough from the technical aspects. But when it comes to the visuals, surely the sequel is a step above its original.

Dusk Diver 2 Review – Final Words:

Dusk Diver 2 is based on its predecessor’s scope, visuals, and music. But it lacks behind in its dungeons, quests, and some aspects of combat.

The game itself isn’t bad. Its asking price is the issue that holds it back from being an easy recommendation. This wouldn’t be an easy pill to recommend this game which has a premium asking price. On Switch, you have many better action games which share a similar price tag.

If you have already played Dusk Diver, enjoy it, and want more. Then the sequel, Dusk Diver 2, is something you can consider. But I would recommend buying it, once its price gets dropped.

Overall, the Dusk Diver is a solid hack and slash adventure with some creative dungeons to explore. But also, it does not have enough variety.
