Recently, in a statement to Variety, Warner Bros. stated, “It is an honor and a privilege to travel back to Middle-earth with our good friend and collaborator, Andy Serkis, who has unfinished business with that stinker – Gollum!”
Back in 2023, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros Discovery, revealed the intention to return to the Lord of the Rings realm when he remarked that Warner Bros., along with the Embracer Group, is thinking of making some new movies that will be solely inspired by the original books of J.R.R. Tolkien.

As such, it is reasonable to assume that this movie would take place in a prequel mode since Gollum died at the end of Return of the King.
Nevertheless, no one really knows when exactly this Gollum-based story falls chronologically except for one highly probable point. Though it was not shown during the film trilogy, during The Fellowship of the Ring, Aragorn and Gandalf searched for Gollum to avoid alerting Sauron on Frodo’s mission.
