This winter has brought a lot of snow to many places, causing disruption in daily life like blocked road and power outages, and it seems like this will continue for another week. States in the Pacific Northwest, northern Plains and Northeast are expected to get more snow over the next seven days.
Seasonal precipitation forecast
In November, the National Weather Service (NWS) Climate Prediction Center shared a seasonal forecast, in which it predicted which states might get above-average precipitation this winter, with some of it coming as snow. It’s only on December 19 that the next forecast will be available, in which experts will provide predictions for the next several months. However, meteorologists at the NWS Weather Prediction Center already have an idea of the winter weather the winter weather expected across the U.S. in the upcoming week.
Northeast hit by winter storm after snowfall in New York
As of Thursday morning, a winter storm was causing snowfall across the Northeast, just days after a separate system brought up to 5 feet of lake-effect snow to parts of New York.
Northeast to experience milder winter weather
David Roth, the NWS Weather Prediction Center meteorologist told Newsweek that once the current system moves on, the Northeast will experience milder winter weather.
States with the highest chance of receiving snow
According to the NWS Weather Prediction Center, in the coming few days, there is a high chance of more than 1 inch of snow near and downwind of the Great Lakes and in the higher elevation of the Northwest. Washington, Oregon, New Hampshire, New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, Montana, Idaho, Maine, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Vermont are the states that are most likely to receive snow.
Northeast to experience mix of cold and mild weather
Roth said that the weather pattern is shifting, with the eastern U.S. expected to experience milder conditions starting as early as Sunday. He also added that this winter, the Northeast will experience alternating periods of cold and mild weather.
A lake-effect snow event might develop in the New England area
Warmer temperatures suggest that any precipitation is more likely to fall as rain. A lake-effect snow event could develop in the New England area by the middle of next week, but Roth mentioned that those states are unlikely to receive too much snowfall. He added that no Nor’easters likely to bring major snowstorms are expected currently in the forecast.
Winter weather warnings in these states
As of Thursday afternoon, winter weather warnings were issued in states like Washington, Michigan, northern Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Maine.
Cold weather warnings and freeze watches in these states
Cold weather warnings and freeze watches were issued in southern states like Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.
Temperature might rise; Rain expected
This weekend, rising temperature will cause most of the snow to melt in the Northeast. According to Roth, on Sunday, rain could also help with some snowmelt.
Montana would be the coldest and snowiest state!
Looking ahead to the rest of the winter, the meteorologist also predicted that Montana would be the coldest and snowiest state this winter.
