Bunkers have become Billionaires and super-rich celebrities’ new obsession! Why do they need bunkers? Are they preparing for a potential war, apocalypse, another pandemic or an alien attack? Do they know something that the common man or general public doesn’t know? or is it just an investment? Well, the reason in not clear.
What we know is that these bunkers are huge and are blast-resistant. These extravagant bunkers are reportedly purchased by these super-rich celebs and are being constructed all over the world, with popular choices being remote islands and New Zealand. These bunkers are equipped with modern amenities, including food, water and medical supplies, advanced technology and even entertainment options. Basically, these are designed to survive anything.
Although most of them have not openly given any statement about the bunker they own, there are reports that these multi-millionaires are building them under their ranches or mansions or on remote islands that they have purchased.
Here are some of the celebrities and billionaires, who are rumored to own bunkers.
Mark Zuckerberg
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has apparently brought large swathes of the Hawaiian island of Kauai. It is being said that he is constructing an extravagant $270 million measuring 5,000-square-foot bunker under his Ko’olau Ranch. The bunker has its own energy and food sources, and also has a blast-resistant door. It also includes a gym, hot tub, sauna, cold plunge, tennis court and pools.
Tom Cruise
In April 2012, there were reports of Tom Cruise’s plan of building bunker worth US$10 million under his Telluride estate at his Colorado home to protect his family against alien attack. The bunker will have a high-tech air-purifying shelter. The facility is said to accommodate 10 people. However, when he listed the estate to sell, there was no mention of the bunker, but there was definitely space to build one.
There are also reports that the Mission Impossible star has spent millions to build an underground bunker beneath his Beverly Hills mansion that’s believed to be a doomsday hideout encouraged by the Church of Scientology. As per the Radar online report, a lot of work was done to dig into the bedrock under his tennis court to create the bunker that included gym, laundry facilities and two bedrooms.
Peter Thiel & Sam Altman
Reports suggest that former Paypal CEO Peter Thiel planned to build an elaborate, bunker-like underground lodge in Aotearoa, New Zealand’s South Island. The proposed project was to cover a significant area of over 73,700 square metres and was intended to be shared with OpenAI’s Sam Altman. However, the plan was rejected due to tensions between Theil and the local council. The residents and local authorities had expressed concerns over environmental impact.
Elon Musk
Elon Musk has an ultra-durable bunker-house Cyber House that’s inspired by Tesla’s Cybertruck. This multi-story structure, created by Russian architecture firm Modern House, is designed to withstand disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes and even zombie apocalypses. It has a reinforced concrete core that can accommodate up to seven people. The bunker also includes systems for treating and purifying water and air. It is powered with solar panels and wind turbines.
Kim Kardashian
Kim Kardashian, who is known for her extravagant lifestyle, has apparently invested substantial resources in a lavish subterranean shelter on her sprawling Hidden Hills estate in California. The bunker boasts premium features like a wellness center, spa and home theatre.
Tyler Perry
The multi-media mogul, who resides in a luxurious 16-million-dollar Beverly Hills mansion, has an underground bunker which accommodates up to 30 people. The bunker has a self-contained water purification system and a chapel for spiritual gatherings.
Post Malone
The rapper owns a $3M apocalypse-proof Utah bunker. In a 2017 interview on the H3 Podcast, he revealed that he plans to build 30 bunk beds. The bunker, built on his Utah property, is said to be equipped with various amenities like living quarters, storage for food and supplies and entertainment options.
Bill Gates
Bill Gates is rumoured to have huge bunkers under every house he owns in Rancho Santa Fe and Washington. These bunkers are equipped with extensive security features, advanced technology for long-term survival and food storage facilities.
Oprah Winfrey
Oprah Winfrey, who purchased a 163-acre estate in 2002, in Maui, is rumored to have an underground bunker hideaway there. The actress and host is also said to have a bunker on her Montecito estate in California.
Larry Ellison
Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison purchased majority of the island of Lanai in Hawaii, in 2012. It is being said that the vast estates of these billionaires (who own land in Lanai) do include bunkers that have technologies traditionally associated with preparing for emergencies or disasters.

The actor has invested in a luxury bunker that is designed with eco-friendly features.

There is also a place known as Billionaire Bunker- Indian Creek Village, a village or a private community in Florida. This is a man-made barrier island, which is extremely secure, has privacy and luxuries rather than the presence of actual bunkers. Who lives or owns properties there? Well, as the name suggests, only super-rich or billionaires can afford property here. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos owns not just one, but multiple properties in there. Other residents of this rich village are Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, Ken Griffin, David Guetta, Tom Brady, Julio Iglesias and Carl Icahn, among others.
