Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Release Date
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set to hit theaters on December 20, 2024. Paramount Pictures unveiled this release date on August 9, 2022, via the official Sonic Movie Twitter page.
This announcement came merely four months after Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s theatrical debut. The schedule continues the trend of supersonic films releasing every two years, albeit this time in a different season.
Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” franchise stands as one of its most successful, with the total worldwide box office earnings of “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” reaching $725.2 million.
Additionally, Paramount is expanding the franchise with a spin-off series, “Knuckles,” set to debut on Paramount+.
The first movie came out in 2020 and quickly became North America’s highest-grossing video game film adaptation.
Storyline – Backstory of Shadow the Hedgehog
The conclusion of Sonic 2 introduced Super Sonic, where Sonic harnesses the power of the Chaos Emeralds, a concept that might be explored further in the upcoming third film. Additionally, the movie concluded with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles forming a trio, hinting at an adventure in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 where they embark on a journey together from the outset.
In the mid-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Shadow the Hedgehog, a prominent character from the games, made his debut. This suggests that Shadow might be the primary antagonist in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Furthermore, Shadow’s appearance sets the stage for the potential inclusion of other game characters like Rouge the Bat, Shadow’s longstanding ally and another morally ambiguous figure.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Cast and Production Team
Most of the cast members from the previous movie will reprise their roles in Sonic 3. It includes the following:

- Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails
- Idris Elba as Knuckles
- James Marsden as Sonic’s adoptive human father, Tom Wachowski
- Tika Sumpter as Sonic’s adoptive human mother, Maddie Wachowski
- Jim Carrey will play Dr. Eggman
- Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone
- Tom Butler as G.U.N. Commander Walters
Keanu Reeves, who played John Wick, is the new addition to Sonic the Hedgehog 3. He shall play the role of Shadow. Moreover, Alyla Brown confirmed that she had been cast as Maria Robotnik in February. The character plays a significant role in Shadow’s storyline.
Other cast members have been confirmed for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but their roles have not yet been revealed. These include Krysten Ritter, James Wolk, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández, and Jorma Taccone.
Jeff Fowler, director of the first two “Sonic” movies, will continue working on the latest sequel. Additionally, Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara, and Hitoshi Okuno will be serving as producers for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
Furthermore, Johnny Gioeli, the lead in Crush 40, signed a deal with Paramount to use the game’s graphics and theme in the film.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Ending Explained
Understanding where the last movie left off will help predict the storyline of Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic adjusts to life with Tom and Maddie in Green Hills, Montana, adopting a superhero role. However, his recklessness leads to unintended consequences.
During Tom and Maddie’s trip to Hawaii, Sonic encounters Dr. Eggman, who escaped from the Mushroom Planet with Knuckles’ help. Knuckles seeks the powerful Master Emerald to restore honor to his tribe—Sonic partners with Tails, who warns him about Knuckles, to locate the legendary jewel.
Meanwhile, Eggman proposes to aid Knuckles in locating the Master Emerald, intending to steal it. Sonic discovers the underwater temple where the Master Emerald emits light near Hawaii, only to find Knuckles and Eggman already there. A confrontation ensues, during which Eggman seizes the Master Emerald, merging with it and betraying Knuckles, causing the temple to sink.
In Green Hills, Eggman utilizes his newfound powers to construct the Death Egg Bot. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles unite to thwart Eggman’s assault on the town and retrieve the Master Emerald, which shatters into seven Chaos Emeralds. Near defeat, Sonic transforms into Super Sonic using the Chaos Emeralds, defeating Eggman and his robot.
Following the battle, Eggman is presumed deceased. Sonic, with the Wachowskis, welcomes Tails and Knuckles into their family, vowing to safeguard the Master Emerald. Meanwhile, G.U.N. investigates Eggman’s whereabouts, discovering files about Project Shadow in a secret research facility. The capsule within the facility unveils Shadow the Hedgehog, awakening from a 50-year cryogenic slumber.
Hence, it is safe to say that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will pick up from here and shall continue unveiling Shadow’s backstory.
